Blog Journal #3
Copyright is a protection of someone’s intellectual property. Fair Use is a part of the 1976 Copyright Act and allows someone to copy materials for nonprofit educational use only as long as it is reasonable. As a teacher, it is important to understand both of these terms when getting materials for the classroom. I would make sure I am allowed to use and reasonably distribute the materials that I need. I would explain these concepts to my students so they understand the importance of not stealing someone else’s work and teach them how to create their own work.
While implementing technology in the classroom can have some great benefits, there are also some issues that consequently come along with it. Two pressing ones are academic dishonesty and cyberbullying. To deal with academic dishonesty, I would make sure there is a plagiarism checker on each assignment submission so I can see if students did the work themselves or not. Additionally, any exams taken online will have some form of live proctoring to make sure students are not cheating. Though that is not always favorable, it is one preventative measure against academic dishonesty. The use of technology in the classroom has also allowed for the rise of cyberbullying. To try to limit/prevent cyberbullying from happening in my classroom, I will make sure the technology has restricted access to social media sites in order to ensure it is being used for educational purposes only.
Creating this newsletter allowed me to use skills I already had, as well as try out some new ones. I typically do not use a column function so that was something I had to figure out, such as spacing everything out neatly so it aligned on the right sides. I could improve my newsletter in the future by using different colors or graphics to make it more appealing to the viewer. I could use the skills I learned from this assignment in my future career by creating a similar newsletter about what is going on in my office in specific months so clients are aware.
Great blog post! You explained copyright and fair use in a very nice and concise way, and I like how you plan to teach the importance of this to your students. Your newsletter looks very nice! You chose a very nice color scheme, which is something that took me awhile to settle on. I also had to figure out how to space everything to make sure it was all neat. Thanks for the post, I look forward to the next one!
ReplyDeleteHi Savannah! I agree with your idea about using a plagiarism checker to limit academic dishonesty. I think a live proctoring system for online exams is a great idea. I think limiting access to technology for non-educational purposes, while not favorable, is a good idea for preventing cyberbullying. I love your newsletter! I like that you chose one subject instead of a whole grade level. The quote of the month section is a nice touch as well!
ReplyDeleteHi, Savannah, great post! I really like your idea of including a plagiarism check on an assignments to make sure students are being academically honest. I also think maybe teaching them how to properly cite any outside sources and give credit where it is due is another great way of minimizing the problem of academic dishonesty and plagiarism. I love your newsletter too!
