I took an asynchronous section of the EME2040 class. One thing I have liked about this class is being able to work on the material at my own pace because I can make my own schedule for when to do the readings and assignments. One thing I have disliked is the grading scale being either a 0, 70, or 100 on assignments. I think it is very unfair and does not adequately reflect the work put into the assignment. As a teacher, I would grade assignments better because it is very discouraging as a student to receive a 70 on an assignment when you have only missed one part of it. In reality, that grade should be more like a 90. Having a grading scale that adequately reflects the student’s work as a teacher could help create a more positive classroom environment and make students more motivated to complete their work.

Open educational resources (OER) are instructional materials that are freely available to the public. They can be used to help teach or learn material by students or teachers. An example of OER is Khan Academy. Khan Academy is a personalized learning resource for students of all ages. It consists of videos and lessons for subjects including history, computer programming, biology, math, and much more. They even have a law school admissions test (LSAT) prep course, showing how diverse their free learning resources are as many LSAT prep courses can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I have created many PowerPoints before throughout my school career, so I already had many of the skills used in the assignment. One thing I had not done before with PowerPoint was a voiceover presentation. This was a new skill I learned because I had to figure out how to properly time my words and how fast I should speak. One thing I did not like about this assignment was the slide layout requirement because I felt like it was pointless in successfully completing the assignment. To improve this assignment next time, I would  maybe add more graphics on the slides to make it more visually appealing.

  1. Hello Savannah! I loved this post! I do agree with the critique of the grading scale, as one mistake leads an assignment receiving a 100 to a 70 instead. Khan Academy is a great example of a OER, it was one that many of my teachers in middle and high school used. Your PowerPoint looks very well put together, great job! Thanks for the great post!

  2. Hi Savannah,
I also hadn't completed a voiceover recording for powerpoint so I am glad someone else also had to tackle learning this skill. I agree with you when it came to creating your own slide. I don't believe it added anything useful really, and it made it harder on me to format it.

  3. Hi Savannah!
This was my first time completing an audio portion for powerpoint as well. I think this tool will be beneficial if I ever have to teach virtually. However, I hope to always be in the classroom and presenting my content to students with interaction and no prior recording. This gives them a chance to practice call and response, rather than me just presenting and teaching the whole time.

  4. Hey Savannah,
I was nervous about the audio part on the powerpoint. I was worried about not speaking fast enough, then I spoke to fast and had to re-record it a couple of times. I agree as well about the creating your own slide.
